What is Dead body freezer box?

Dead body freezer box which is also commonly called a dead body box, Mortuary box and dead body icebox is a freezer box that is used to preserve the dead body from decomposition for a few hours.  The box will have a cabinet to place the human corpse and will have a mechanism to keep the cabinet at a lower temperature. Once a person is dead, the body of the diseased person has to be preserved for various reasons like autopsy, identification or respectful burial or cremation.  The body can be preserved in different ways like embalming, Mummification, and freezing.  Usually, dead bodies are preserved in Morgue in Mortuary room when a body id under control of hospitals or police for legal clearance. However the family wants the body to be properly preserved even after the body is officially handover by the hospital for respectful cremation or funeral of a diseased person, these are where a portable dead body freezer box comes in rescue for the family. Dead body freezer box is usually portable or fitted to Mortuary van. This freezer box is custom-built for this purpose.  Usually, the outer body of a dead body freezer box is built by stainless steel or glass to avoid contamination or reaction with the diseased body.  Majority of the dead body icebox have lower bottom stainless steel and upper body glass such that it could be used for display purpose also.  The dead body freezer box is electrically powered to keep the internal cabinet at a lower temperature. The dead body freezer box will typically weigh 80 to 100 Kg, and usually, the size of the mortuary box will be 7*4*3 ( length* breadth* height) and sometimes the size will be custom build as per the requirement. The freezing temperature range of the majority of dead body freezer box will be in the range of 0 to 8 degree Celsius.  There is also a mortuary box which has a temperature range of -2 to -30 degree Celsius but usually used by the forensic department when a body needs longer preservation for autopsy or other legal requirements, which could preserve the body for months. Dead body freezer box will not stop the dead body from decomposing, but it slows down the process of decomposition due to a lower temperature. Commercially available dead body freezer box will usually avoid decomposing for 24 hours to 48 hours depending upon the freezing temperature and the materials used.

Application of Dead body freezer box

Dead body storage:  It is used to store the dead body for a few hours or a few days before the diseased person is taken for the cremation or other legal investigations.  Unlike Embalming Dead body freezer box is the easiest way to preserve a dead body for a short period of time. Dead body display:  usually in India, dead body icebox is used to display the body of the diseased person to friends, family, and relatives as a part of rituals/the last ride. The Dead body freezer box used for this purpose will have an upper part of the entire part made up of glass so that the body of the diseased will be easily visible to visitors. Dead body transportation by road:  if a diseased person needs to be transported from one city to another city then a Freezer box fitted mortuary vehicle needs to be used. This vehicle is a special vehicle designed for the purpose of dead body transportation for a longer distance, and are fixed with the freezer box.  This freezer box is powered by a vehicle battery while the vehicle is running hence keep the body away from decomposition.  The charges for Freezer box fitted vehicles will be a little higher than the normal mortuary vehicle.  One can also choose to do dead body transportation by air in case of long-distance; in that case, a dead body freezer box is not required as the dead body will have to undergo Embalming.

Types of Dead body freezer box

Fully covered dead body freezer box: In this mortuary box the entire outer body part is covered by stainless steel and there will be a cabinet to place dead body. The cabinet will maintain the temperature in the range of 0 to 8 degrees Celsius. This type of freezer box is used for storage where there is no necessity of displaying a dead body to others, this type of freezer boxes are also used during dead body transportation from one place to other Dead body Display freezer box:   in this the lower half of the Mortuary box is made up of stainless steel and the upper half is made up of glass. And there will be a cabinet to place the dead body and to maintain the temperature in the range of 0 to 8 degrees Celsius.  This type of mortuary box is usually used for the display of dead bodies to friends, family, and relatives as a part of rituals before cremating the body.  This is the most general dead body freezer box hence the availability is also high. Hence sometimes this type of freezer box is also used in Mortuary vehicles for long-distance dead body transportation by road. Fully glass fitted dead body freezer box:  In this, the entire outer body of the freezer box is made of glass and the internal cabinet to place the dead body at lower temperature.  This model is rarely available and is a little higher price than the normal freezer box. This model is only used for the display of the diseased person before the cremation. VIP and VVIP Freezer box:  This is a specially designed dead body freezer box for displaying the body of VIP personalities, Politicians, soldiers and celebrities.  These boxes have special design patterns on top of the outer body and will have grand look with decorations including silver or gold plating to make it look premium and has a wider display panel, with additional doom.  Often these boxes have special materials inside the dead body cabinet and the motor used for freezing will be of better quality than usual.  Few of these freezer boxes are also battery enable in case of an external power failure and a radiator to manually control the temperature of the internal cabinet.

The rent for Dead body freezer box depends on two factors the number of days/hours the dead body freezer box is needed on rent and type of dead body freezer box.  When you book a Mortuary box on rent, you need to know for how many days you need to preserve the body and the type of freezer box you need to have, sometimes the cost will also depend on the distance of your place from the vendor place. If the place that you want to keep the freezer box is far from the city Centre, then the cost will be high as the vendor need to transport the freezer box for longer distance.
